Projects and plans
The ministry is pursuing the plan to increase power generation from present 4000MW to 10, 000MW by the end of 2007 through further rehabilitation of existing generating plants, construction of new host generating plants, proposed seven (7) medium size power plants in Niger- Delta and Independent Power Producers (IPPs) as follows:
(i) Rehabilitation of 150MW Delta III Power plant
(ii) Work has commenced on the construction of gas - fired host generation plants at Geregu (414MW), to be completed by Dec 2006, Papalanto (335MW), Alaoji (346MW), Delta III (150MW), and Omotosho 335MW; totaling about 1400MW expected by December 2006.
(iii) On IPP Phase one of Agip Power Plant project will inject 480MW into the grid; has been completed. A negotiation of PPA between Shell Petroleum Development Company and Power Holding Company on 650MW Afam Power Plant is concluded.
(iv) Other Projects include Mambila Hydro for which a consultant is producing a bankable feasibility study report for the project, for which funds are being sought from China .A project team under the presidency has been approved and is now working on the project. The Dadin Kowa 34MW hydroelectric power project is being processed for final approval either on BOT or contract bargain.
(v) Seven new medium-sized power stations (including associated transmission infrastructure; gas infrastructure and distribution projects for the host community and other parts of the country)are being implemented for the completion by 2007-2008 with the following capacities; Calabar in CrossRiver State (5000MW), Egbema-Imo State(350MW), Eyaen-Edo State(500MW), Gbarain/Ubie- Bayelsa State (250MW), Ikot Abasi- Akwa Ibom State (300MW), Sapele- Delta State (500MW), Omoku- Rivers State (250MW); totaling about 2650MW
(vi) On renewable energy the ministry is undertaking the following actions:
Consultancy services to produce a master plan for the implementation of renewable energy guideline for renewable energy implementation, two solar pilot projects are ongoing in Kastina and Bauchi State
Two more Solar Pilot Projects in Cross River and Ogun state and two Small-Hydro Projects in Edo, Cross Rivers State are in the process of being awarded.
The Japanese Government is assisting Nigeria to produce a Master Plan for Utilizations of Solar Energy in Nigeria for off grid rural electrifications.
The Japanese Government through Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Nigeria .
The Agency is currently constructing three solar pilot schemes in Ondo, Jigawa and Imo State . The Imo project has been completed. |
